Affiliate Disclosure

Darleng Cambodia started because we wanted to share more of Cambodia. We wanted to write about the places we’d visited, the things we’d learnt along the way and some of the parts of Cambodia that don’t always make it into the usual travel guides.

When we started, we were quite happy to do that for free. Then we discovered just how much time goes into running a travel website. Travelling, taking photos, researching, writing, checking information and keeping old articles up to date all take time, and there are costs involved in keeping Darleng running too.

But our readers come first. Making money from Darleng will never decide what we write about or what we recommend.

We would like Darleng to eventually cover some of the costs involved in running it and allow us to keep travelling, writing and sharing more of Cambodia. One way we hope to do that is through affiliate links and we want to be very clear about how we do that.

Our readers come first. Making money from Darleng allows us to keep writing about and sharing Cambodia, but it doesn’t decide what we write about or what we recommend.

How affiliate links work

Some links on Darleng are affiliate links. If you click one of these links and make a booking or purchase, we may receive a small commission. It doesn’t cost you anything extra.

You are never under any obligation to use one of our affiliate links. If you’d rather go directly to the business or booking website, that’s completely fine.

If you do use one, thank you. It helps us cover some of the costs of running Darleng and allows us to keep producing new articles.

What we will recommend

We only explicitly recommend products and services that we’ve tried ourselves.

We won’t recommend a hotel we’ve never stayed at, a tour we’ve never taken or a service we’ve never used simply because there’s an opportunity to make a commission.

And having an affiliate programme doesn’t automatically earn something a recommendation. If we tried something and didn’t like it, we’re not going to tell you that we did.

There will also be plenty of places and experiences on Darleng that don’t make us any money at all. That’s fine. If we think they’re worth sharing, we’ll share them.

Cambodia comes first

Cambodia isn’t simply the subject of this website. It’s our home. Nehru was born here and Mel has lived here since 2019, and we want more people to come and experience Cambodia for themselves.

We’re also increasingly seeing travel content that appears to have been created without anyone actually visiting the places they’re writing about, along with plenty of over-marketing of the same destinations, hotels and experiences.

We don’t want Darleng to become that.

We want people to travel around Cambodia, spend money in different communities and see more of what the country has to offer. Sometimes the best place we can tell you about will have an affiliate programme. Quite often it won’t.

Either way, we’d rather tell you about the place we think is worth visiting.

Sponsored and hosted experiences

From time to time, we may work directly with businesses, tourism organisations or other partners in Cambodia. This might include paid sponsorships, hosted stays, complimentary experiences or other collaborations.

If we’ve received payment, a free stay, a complimentary experience or anything else that could influence what we’re writing about, we’ll tell you.

We also won’t accept an offer simply because it’s free. We only accept hosted stays or experiences that we would genuinely be interested in visiting or doing ourselves.

Accepting a hosted experience or sponsorship doesn’t guarantee a positive review or recommendation. We won’t agree to promote something we don’t believe is a good fit for Darleng or our readers.

We also particularly like opportunities to work directly with Cambodian businesses and organisations where they fit with what we’re trying to do with Darleng.

Other ways to support Darleng

Affiliate links aren’t the only way we may fund Darleng. As the website grows, we may also introduce other ways for readers to support what we’re doing.

Whether you use an affiliate link, support us directly or simply read one of our articles and use it to explore somewhere new in Cambodia, we’re glad you’re here.

The most important thing is that Darleng remains useful, independent and focused on Cambodia.
